News

Dear valued member,

I’m reaching out to update you on a recent meeting with the Minister of Health. Last month, your Vice President Linda Renkas and I had to opportunity to meet with the Minister of Health to share concerns about working conditions, the lack of a retention plan for our existing health workers as well as the need for a fair deal at the bargaining table.

While the Minister appeared to express concern about these issue at the time, we have learned that he has since been responding to correspondence from our members who wrote him to highlight their cost-of-living concerns with a self-congratulatory letter than minimizes their concerns and suggests their government has done enough to help our members go by.

Bargaining Information Rallies

“Together for Better”

As you may have heard, we are hosting bargaining information rallies across the province this spring. Held in each region, these rallies are to raise awareness about the cost-of-living challenges we are facing and to gather public support in our fight for a fair deal at the bargaining table.

It is more important than ever that we stand together to send a strong message to the provincial government that we are the backbone of the health system and deserve a fair deal.

If you have any questions about the rallies or how you can do your part, please contact your regional office!

CUPE 5430 is pleased to announce that after a review by the market supplement committee, a market supplement will be implemented for our members who work as Medical Radiation Technologists. This was a member driven process following a request through the Market Supplement Program under Letter of Understanding (LOU) #19. Their success was in part due to the information and support provided by members in this classification.

Between CUPE 5430, SGEU, and SEIU-West there are several classifications which are still in the review process, including nuclear medicine technologist, licensed practical nurse, continuing care assistant, and cytotechnologist. If you believe that your classification is facing significant barriers to recruitment, and there are ongoing unfilled vacancies, please review LOU #19 for the criteria and send your request to your regional office.

After months of work through the market supplement process, CUPE 5430 is pleased to share that after a review by the market supplement committee, a market supplement will be implemented for our Medical Radiation Technologist and Medical Radiation Technologist – Specialty employees.

This recommendation was reviewed by SAHO, the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and CUPE 5430, and the parties have signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to a market supplement being implemented.

REGINA: Following a decision from the Court of King’s Bench last week, CUPE 5430 welcomes the ruling which will maintain CUPE membership for the 600 former Extendicare employees now working for the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) in Regina.

The ruling rejected the application for a stay pending judicial review of the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board decision that made these employees CUPE members as of November 30, 2023. The court considered a number of factors in its decision, but determined the harm and health costs to the SHA would suffer by ordering a stay of proceedings would outweigh the perceived harm to a few employees from not granting the stay. The dates for the judicial review through the Court of King’s Bench have yet to be determined but are expected in November or December 2024 at the earliest.

CUPE is pleased to welcome nearly 600 members to CUPE 5430! This transition for employees at Sunset, Elmview, and Parkside in Regina was the result of a Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board (SLRB) decision released on November 30, 2023.

In October 2022, the Saskatchewan Health Authority took over management of five long-term care facilities from Extendicare. The SLRB decided that as the exclusive bargaining agent for former Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region health service providers, CUPE will represent workers at the three former Extendicare facilities in Regina.
